New York Stewart International Airport Facilities & Services

Officially called the New York Stewart International Airport, it formerly served as a military airport. Currently, its operator is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The airport was developed in the 1930s. It was initially a military base that enabled the United States Military Academy cadets at West Point to learn about aviation.

SWF then became the first privatized US commercial airport when the National Express based in the United Kingdom acquired its 99-year lease. Postponing the plan of changing the airport’s name was a result of considerable local opposition.

After seven years, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey acquired rights over it for the remaining 93 years of the lease. On the day of taking over the facility, there was an opening ceremony in which Elliot Spitzer, then New York State Governor, attended and raised the flag of the Port Authority.
